The
Concept of airport design and construction has undergone great changes
since the advent of commercial airline operations. The rapid growth
of the aviation industry as well as traffic has necessitated the
constant upgradation of facilities to keep pace
Airports
were merely places that provided for the safe take-off and landing
of aircraft. Now, all modern airports are being constructed to fully
cater to the variety of needs of the main customer
the traveler.
Revenue generation is no longer restricted to the landing and parking
of aircraft. It now depends equally on opportunities for commercial
exploitation. Successful airports the world over operate as financially-viable
business units. In view of Lahore International Airport developing
into a hub for international traffic, and to cater to the northern
zone of the country, the CAA has undertaken the construction of
a new passenger terminal complex. This facility is being constructed
to the east of the main runway. Although the current annual passenger
turnover at the Lahore International Airport is over 2.5 million,
projections indicate that it will exceed 6.5 million in 2015. The
construction of the new terminal building is well underway. This
presents investors with an ideal opportunity to develop commercial
concessions concurrently. It will enable the CAA to have all the
facilities of a truly international airport in place at the time
of commencing operations from the new facility. The new Terminal
building has been designed, keeping in mind the rich architectural
heritage of the city of Lahore, so that it blends in with the environment.
It will be a reflection of Lahore's Moghul architecture and will
be a unique representation of the traditional style and modern facilities.
The terminal is being built according to a two-level linear concept
with over approximately 71,000 sq.mtr. covered space. The facility
is designed to cater to the needs of more than 6.5 million passengers
annually. The terminal building has provisions for 7 contact stands,
55 check-in-counters, 5 baggage reclaim belts, facilities for transit
passengers, aside from conveniences like banks, restaurants, and
duty free shops for the benefit and comfort of passengers.
